mamma's tips for heading to the basketball

We’re heading into summer so you know what that means? Basketball season with the NBL has arrived! Basketball is fun for lots of people, you don’t even have to like the game! There’s a lot of fun, noise and action the whole way through.

During stoppages, there’s cheerleading, breakdancing, towel waving competitions, hand clapper comps and at half time games where spectators compete for prizes. Plus, there’s also a basketball game with running commentary happening between all that!

Mamma loves watching the bball with the fam and has just the tips you need to make the most of your trip. Firstly, arrive early if you want to join in on some pre-game fun outside the arena, where plenty of hand clappers are up for grabs. More tips:

  • Snacks. It really does go with out saying, but the more snacks the better! However, if you’re pressed for time there is food available to buy here including kids packs with chips, nuggets, popcorn and a drink.

  • It is LOUD! Noise cancelling headphones for the kids can help avoid a sensory overload! (You know your kid - NBL games are full of noise and spectacle - it may not be a great environment for all.)

  • Check the match up! Melbourne Derby games are always fun and promise a good sized crowd and good competition.

  • Plan your strategy for parking, as sometimes the walk to the arena can be epic. Catching the train (to Richmond Station) is often the best option, or find street parking at Richmond or near the Botanic Gardens and hike it in.

  • Book in advance! This is not the MCG - there are much fewer seats so avoid disappointment and book ahead!

  • Consider a membership. There are even 3-game memberships, to allow you a few opportunities to have some fun without the need for all your weekends to revolve around heading to games.

Now, time to go practice shooting some 3’s… or at least practice cheering for them!
